BLACK PANTHER AND WHY NOLLYWOOD SUCKS

WARNING: THIS IS A RANT!!!

If you don’t live under a proverbial rock then you definitely should know what black panther is, here’s the boring part. After its groundbreaking release and success besting popular cinematic hits like “Justice league” with a whooping one billion dollars in one month fans have declared there is no longer a DC versus Marvel competition and Named Black Panther the Movie to end black racism ,well for whites.

For better or worse it has also created a brotherhood of Africans or new-age Black supremacists slowly spreading continent by continent and through the internet via memes, blog posts, viral videos, food, fashion, literature and a clever new handshake

It is the genesis of a new age, a mindset where Africa is no longer a place in need or desolated but a paradise you’d actually wanna visit. So iron your natives and polish your palms, it is our time to shine

Speaking of shines, Nigerian actors and actresses are also taking the spotlight with names like David opegbemi and the now popular child actor “Emmanuela” taking on huge acting roles in the Hollywood industry. Black Panther has not only created a trailer load of profit for Marvel but a possible goldmine just waiting to be artistically well…mined.

So get your resume’s ready and highlight “African” because your black identity is your first class ticket.

With this new love for the color black comes the need for more content, for more African oriented drama, food and fashion, for more ways for us to connect with the outside world. If only we had a movie industry created to show enough of our true nature as Africans…as Nigerians…oh wait…

Nollywoodmovies

Montage of Nigerian movies and Nollywood

Introducing Nollywood!! Fabled to be the third best movie industry in the world that’s literally been around since the 19th century [says Wikipedia]. Granted we have a lot of powerful ,cultural inputs and a strong following within the African diaspora in Europe and the USA but very few of these movies have had any wide-spread international acclaim [except 30 days in Atlanta...that was lit].

Until very recently[Black panther] we haven’t had much of an African creative society apart from a few groundbreaking achievements in fashion, technology and the prevailing Comic book culture, the movie industry is sadly following the competition sparsely behind at dead last. This is not to spite the efforts of powerful film producers like Teco benson, Emem isong, Ayo Makun[A.Y], Niyi akimolayan[wedding party] and Tchidi Tchikere but we definitely know that neither the actors nor our village people are to blame this time. This is made instead to trigger an answer to the question that is Black Panther.

What was it, what is it and what can be done about it. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has created a new genre that didn’t even exist a few years before and it is not stopping anytime soon. Will comics become movies? Will we keep being forced to watch the dystopic love children of Comedy ,drama and Bad writing? Will Nollywood ever stop making us cringe?

Yours Faithfully,

The Nosy Nigerian.
